“Somewhere to speak freely without fear of judgement. A place where you can meet similar people without it feeling forced.”
We want queer young voices to feel empowered, queer experiences to be showcased loudly, vibrantly and authentically. We want to create artistic spaces where LGBTQIA+ 18-25 year olds are in the majority, developing high quality theatre, facilitated by the very best from the performance industry…
So we’re launching our first National Queer Young Company.

Here, the Sanctuary Young Company artists discuss their experiences with Sanctuary Queer Arts so far… the challenges, successes and hopes for the next phase of this project.
about the project
From September 2020 to February 2021 we engaged with 10 LGBTQIA+ identifying artists, from across Scotland aged 18-25 to begin to creatively explore what ‘sanctuary’ means to them today. The Young Company is lead by experienced theatre artist Fraser MacLeod. The artists are provided with provocations to generate creative responses to develop their practice. All artists come together digitally to build their national network of peers, share ideas and present their work as it develops.
Sanctuary Queer Arts is providing mentorship and guidance in between sessions to support the progress of each individual throughout the project. Specialist workshops and guest artists will work directly with the young company in skills development throughout. Mental health and wellbeing support is being offered in partnership with Pure Potential Scotland.
Working with award winning filmmaker Ania Urbanowska the Young Company is now shaping their work to create a film that captures and celebrates their work. This film will premier at Sanctuary’s Showcase event due to happen in autumn 2021.
