Meet Ava

Who are you?

I’m Ava, a 21-year-old they/she queer from rural Highland Perthshire. I’m currently based in Glasgow, studying theatre and film with the hope of working as a director/dramaturge in the future. I like to bake. I hill walk and forage for mushrooms. I fix bikes in my spare time. I like learning new skills and reading weird non-fiction.

How did you get here?

I got here through youth theatre. It was the first place where I didn’t stick out like a sore thumb. I then worked with the group in turn as an AD, a dramaturge and a writer for four years from when I was 16. I got really passionate about making theatre with young people and helping them to express themselves. I like devising and collaborating: any opportunity to work with people who have had different experiences to me is a good one. I write and perform, I like to paint and build things and take pictures. I like making stuff about stuff, and I really like working with other people to do it. I got here because I’m always searching for new people to help me find myself.

What does the concept of Sanctuary mean to you?

Sanctuary to me is a safe haven, somewhere that anyone can shelter from the things that haunt them. It is a space where one can be cared for, tend wounds and regain strength. A place anyone can call home.

What does your Sanctuary look like?

My sanctuary is calling my mum after a long day, my best friend handing me a cup of tea or gin, my dad wrapping me in a hug that smells of woodsmoke and the outdoors. My sanctuary is when I can forget about the rest of the world and just sit, breathing in that moment with one other person.
