Meet Myfanwy
Who are you?
I’m Myfanwy Morgan, I’m 24 & currently based in the dauntingly cis/het Thurso, Caithness. I’m a chronically ill, performance maker, actor, singer-songwriter, storyteller, drag king in training & general quipster.
How did you get here?
I was seven years and fifty-one weeks old when I joined the local theatre club (you had to be eight to join). From there I acted, I sang and danced my way through most of the negativity in life. In High school I joined the drama club, studied Higher drama at Eden Court, I represented the country twice at international theatre festivals, then studied a HNC in Acting at Inverness College, HND at Performance Art Studio Scotland then started a degree in Acting for Stage and screen at QMU/Napier. While at Uni I filmed a small part in Anna & the Apocalypse directed by John McPhail. However, my mental health declined I dropped out of Uni and moved back to Caithness. I kept myself creative though and did NTS Exchange 2016 and 2018, joined Performance Collective Stranraer as a guest artist and worked with them for most of 2018 and 2019. I was close to finding balance, then I had a near-death experience and was diagnosed with heart failure diagnosis at 22. And it was then when I knew I couldn’t supress my feelings for women, NB’s and most importantly personalities. I came out as queer. I’m still new to life as a queer, chronically ill artist and I’m as nervous as I am excited to work and find my place in the industry.
What does the concept of Sanctuary mean to you?
Safety, acceptance and empathy. In my Sanctuary the phrase “it is not happening to you, so why do you care so much?” is never uttered. Sanctuaries can be manifested in spaces, but it primarily has to do with the mindsets of the people that inhabit that Sanctuary – including yourself & checking your own prejudices.
