Meet Rebecca

Who are you?

I’m Rebecca. I’m twenty years old. I’m a disabled lesbian and an aspiring actress and playwright. I love musical theatre and vintage fashion.

How did you get here?

When I was younger, I was the last person anyone would have expected to want to be an actress. I was unbelievably shy, and I hated being in front of an audience. This all changed when I played the orphan Tessie in the school musical Annie and I fell in love with performing. I spent the next few years wanting to pursue musical theatre but when I realised how much more I loved acting, I auditioned for a HND course in Acting and Performance which I recently finished. Through this course I realised how much I also love making theatre. So, I’ve been taking a lot of writing classes, mainly with the theatre company Birds of Paradise. I’ve wanted to connect with other LGBTQ+ people for so long and being able to combine that with creating theatre in this young company is the perfect scenario for me.

What does the concept of sanctuary mean to you?

A place where I can feel calm, comfortable and be completely myself, surrounded by a community of people who support me and who I can help support.

What does your sanctuary look like?

Sitting in a coffee shop with friends, talking about theatre, creativity, and our lives. We look out the window to see that it’s dark outside and realise that we’ve been talking for the entire day and it’s only felt like five minutes.
