In 2023-2024 Sanctuary worked with partner venues and organisation to time, space and resource to Queer Artists in Scotland.

We received hundreds of application for the 8 development opportunities proving the need for artists to have time to develop their ideas, practice and skills in a safe creative environment.

All opportunties offered financial resource to develop their idea. Rounds 1 & 2 offered up to one week in our partner venues; Aberdeen Performing Arts, Lyth Arts Centre and the Theatre Royal Dumfries.

An emerging writer was offered dramaturgical support and additional time and support in writing their first play for A Play, A Pie and A Pint, as part of their Summer 2024 season.

An emerging director was employed to assist the director on the A Play, A Pie and A Pint production before receiving time, space and resource to develop their own idea.

Each artists received mentorship from established industry professionals, prodcuing support from Sacntuary and the offer of additional mental health and wellbeing support from our partners at Pure Potential Scotland.

Additional partnerships were formed throughout the project with space from Take Me Somewhere and company development support from Magnetic North.

    Hannah McGregor was successful with their pitch for ‘Ness’.

    A young queer Scot meets the misunderstood Loch Ness Monster in this new comedy.

    Em, a young queer Scot, is on the bonnie banks of Loch Ness when they encounter the fabled monster…only Nessie sincerely wishes that they wouldn’t use the word ‘monster.’

    Together, the pair form an unlikely bond which is determined to break boundaries, as they attempt to reconcile Em with their estranged mother and Nessie with a world which has been determined to make them disappear.

    Featuring an iconic drag queen Nessie, Ness is a new queer Scottish comedy exploring the tradition of monsters, identity, and how we tell our own stories.

    Co-presented with A Play, A Pie and A Pint and Aberdeen Performing Arts, in collaboration with Sanctuary Queer Arts.

  • EMERGING DIRECTOR

    Emma Lynne Harley was successful in applying for the Emerging Director opportunity.

    Emma Lynne assisted Debbie Hannan in the A Play, A Pie and A Pint production of ‘Ness’.

    Emma Lynne then went on to develop their own verbatim theatre piece ‘Bye Sexuality’ with time for interviews, writing and a week of development in A Play, A Pie and A Pint.

    Mentorship was provided by Mariem Omari.
